The Bureau handles only civil, not criminal, cases. Priorities for general civil legal services are family/domestic, housing, income maintenance (public benefits), and consumer/finance. Many of the Bureau’s local offices represent children in CINA (Child in Need of Assistance) proceedings. Other vulnerable populations, such as senior citizens, migrant and seasonal farm workers, and nursing home and assisted living residents, receive specialized representation at hearings and trials, legal advice, and referrals to other sources of assistance. Legal Aid follows the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines (FGIP), except for specialized services where eligibility conditions, such as age, are set by the terms of the grants. The Bureau gives priority to those clients with a maximum income of 125% of FPIG. Under some circumstances, it may serve clients at 187.5% of the FPIG. There is no fee for the Legal Aid Bureau’s services.
